JUNIOR NEWS LETTER
April, 2008
Take the ACT
Don't wait until your senior year to start your college plans. There are things you need to do now. If you haven't already taken the ACT, you need to sign up now. The registration deadline is May 9 for the June 14 test. It's important to have a score before your senior years starts because the ACT won't be given again until late October. If you are on free or reduced lunch ACT will waive the registration fee twice, but you must have a fee waiver form from the guidance office. Register with packets from the guidance office or online at www.act.org. If you don't already have your own ACT Online Prep Account, see me for your username and password so that you can begin studying now.
Begin the College Selection Process
There are other things you can do this spring and summer to get ready for college. Write to colleges you are considering and evaluate the literature sent to you. Attend college visitation days. Start eliminating choices from your original list. Once school is out, get on the road to visit colleges. Don't just show up and walk around. Call the admissions office at the college to make an appointment or ask about summer visitation days. Take the tour, ask questions, and have interviews. Make the trip as useful as you can.
Senior Portraits
For all students who are
interested in making Senior Portraits, those pictures will be made during the
summer months of the year 2008. Dates for these Senior Portraits are
scheduled for the week of June 23-25. Senior Portraits
have been scheduled so that the dates do not interfere with the Graduation Exam
that will be given in July. Notices as to times and dates of appointments
for each student will be sent to the homes of students early this summer.
If any student does not receive a portrait notification by July 10, please call
the school office. Also, please note that as of now, no date has been
scheduled for make-up pictures. In other words, please make arrangements
so that appointment dates and times can be met.
Mrs. Barron
Girls State and Boys State
Dallas County High School can send one girl and one boy to participate in a "laboratory of practical government, policies, and citizenship." Girls State is June 8-13 at Troy University and costs $150. Boys State is June 1-7 at the University of Alabama and costs $150. If you are an outstanding student interested in government, see Mrs. Miller for an application.
Dallas County Junior Miss Program
The Junior Miss program is an opportunity for senior girls to compete for cash tuition scholarships. GPA, ACT, self-expression, poise, composure, agility, physical fitness and talent as a performer are needed. Visit www.ajm.org and click "join us" to complete the application by May 9. The program will be held August 9.
How Will You Spend Your Summer?
Watch the bulletin board in the main building for information on summer programs. Most have deadlines, so you need to start making plans now. You should also get involved in activities that will strengthen your scholarship applications, which often ask for a list of volunteer, employment, and extracurricular activities. Show that you're a well-rounded person who knows how to manage your time.
